Acoustic Sunday showcases acoustic performers from the Highlands and beyond, this month we are proud to bring to the stage 3 fantastic performers based within the Inverness area:

Liza Mullholland
Born and brought up in Inverness, Liza has been involved in folk music for many years. Although classically trained in piano, her family background of a big Glasgow-Irish clan of musicians and singers on her father’s side, and the Gaelic song tradition of her mother’s Isle of Lewis heritage, inevitably meant a strong pull towards the folk scene.

After graduating from Glasgow University, Liza played in some of the city’s piano bars, toured Britain, Ireland and France in the early 1990s with folk/country band, CirMhor, including supporting American comedian, the late Bill Hicks, on his British tour, and went on to work with many diverse musicians. Playing with the Deaf Heights Cajun Aces, fiddler Bruce MacGregor, Gaelic singers Fiona MacKenzie and Brian O h Eadhra, cellist Christine Hanson, the Peyote Family, Davy Cowan And The Stormchasers, Andy Gunn’s blues band and others, she has also played on many albums, and her tunes and songs have been recorded by Bruce MacGregor and own indie-folk band, Dorec-a-belle.

On her first solo album of original songs and tunes, Fine ‘n’ Rosy, Liza brings together some top players, including cousin, Rua Macmillan, winner of Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Of the Year 2009, Alasdair Taylor of the Trad Folk Award-winning band, The Elephant Sessions, Robin Abbot of The Mystic Shoes and Dave Martin of The Big Fat Electric Ceilidh. This intimate album comprises reflective ballads and uptempo songs with catchy choruses, complemented by rollicking trad-style tunes and dreamy instrumentals. All are self-penned except the Gaelic classic, Mi Le M’ Uilinn, composed by her great uncle, Murdo MacFarlane, the Melbost Bard.

Coca Tenorio
Coca grew up in the remote coastal villages of Esmeraldas. A region of Ecuador known for its strong Afro-Ecuadorian culture & musical heritage. She now lives in Scotland and returned to Ecuador in 2009 to record her debut album “Todo Transito”, with musicians based in the Andes of Ecuador. Todo Transito was recorded at a number of studios at Salo Audio Quito and Horeb Musica Cayambe and mixed and mastered at Watercolour music studio, Scotland.

Coca has been guest musician on BBC Radio Scotland’s – Global Gathering and Highland Cafe programmes and is currently playing at small gigs in Scotland.

Beyond the mic, Coca is a fashion designer in her own right and continues to develop her clothes label – Coca Couture.

Lauren Mackenzie
Lauren Mackenzie is a Scottish pop folk singer originally from Inverness. Lauren’s passion for music has seen her perform with bands in the area over the years, with highlights including high profile slots at Festivals such as Belladrum and Rockness before going on to study music in Glasgow. As a self taught guitarist and vocalist Lauren is now writing and performing solo, with an aim to have an EP released by the end of the year.
